Ingredients

Scale

Cake

  • 1 Devil’s Food Chocolate cake mix, plus ingredients listed on the cake box (typically eggs, oil, and water)

Toppings

  • 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk
  • 16 ounces caramel sauce
  • 8 ounces Cool Whip
  • 4 Heath bars, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Make Cake Batter: Prepare the Devil’s Food Chocolate cake batter according to the package instructions for a 9×13-inch cake, mixing all ingredients thoroughly.
  3. Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake as directed on the cake mix box, usually about 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Make Holes for Soaking: Once the cake is baked and still warm, use the round handle end of a wooden spoon to poke holes evenly all over the surface of the cake. This allows the milk and caramel to soak deeply.
  5. Add Sweetened Condensed Milk: Pour the entire 14 ounces of sweetened condensed milk evenly over the cake, using a spatula or spoon to spread it out so it soaks into the holes.
  6. Add Caramel Sauce: Pour the 16 ounces of caramel sauce evenly over the sweetened condensed milk layer and spread it out gently over the cake’s surface.
  7. Chill the Cake: Refrigerate the cake for at least two hours to allow the flavors to meld and the topping to set.
  8. Add Cool Whip and Heath Bars: After chilling, spread the 8 ounces of Cool Whip evenly over the top of the cake. Then sprinkle the chopped Heath bars evenly over the Cool Whip for added crunch and flavor.
  9. Serve: Slice and serve chilled. Keep leftovers refrigerated.

Notes

  • Use fresh Heath bars for the best crunch and flavor contrast; substitute with toffee bits if unavailable.
  • Make holes evenly to ensure the milk and caramel soak throughout the cake.
  • Allow ample chilling time for the cake to set properly and be most flavorful.
  • For a stronger chocolate flavor, consider adding espresso powder to the cake batter.
  • This cake can be prepared a day ahead and refrigerated to enhance the flavors.
