Ingredients

Scale

Tea Base

  • Handful of butterfly blue pea flowers
  • 1 cup boiling water

Sweetener

  • 1 cup brown sugar (or natural sweetener)
  • Warm water, enough to dissolve sugar (about 1/2 cup)

Other Liquids

  • 2 cups room temperature filtered water
  • Juice of 12 lemons
  • Optional: Lavender extract (a few drops)

Serving

  • Ice for serving

Instructions

  1. Steep the Butterfly Pea Flowers: Boil 1 cup of water in a pot and add the butterfly pea flowers. Let them steep for 5 minutes until the water turns a beautiful blue color. Then strain out the flowers, leaving the vibrant blue tea.
  2. Dissolve the Sweetener: While the tea is still warm, dissolve the brown sugar in about 1/2 cup of warm water to create a sweet syrup. Mix this syrup with the strained blue pea flower tea to combine the sweetness and color base.
  3. Prepare the Lemonade Base: Stir in 2 cups of room temperature filtered water into the sweetened blue tea. For an aromatic twist, optionally add a few drops of lavender extract at this stage and stir well.
  4. Serve with Ice and Lemon Juice: Fill glasses with ice cubes and pour the prepared blue lemonade over the ice. Finally, add fresh lemon juice to each glass. Watch as the color magically changes from blue to purple, indicating the lemonade is ready to enjoy.

Notes

  • Use fresh butterfly pea flowers for the best natural color extraction.
  • Adjust the amount of lemon juice according to your desired tartness and intensity of color change.
  • Brown sugar can be substituted with honey, agave syrup, or other natural sweeteners.
  • For a non-alcoholic twist, a splash of sparkling water can be added before serving.
  • Store any leftover lemonade in the refrigerator and consume within 2 days for optimal freshness.
