Ingredients

Scale

Apple Filling

  • 6 apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • ½ tsp grated nutmeg
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp white sugar
  • Juice of half a lemon

Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (can substitute with self-raising flour)
  • 1 cup porridge oats
  • 125 g cold butter or melted butter, softened
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (375°F) and prepare a baking dish by greasing it lightly or lining it with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare Apple Filling: Peel, core, and chop the apples into bite-sized pieces. Transfer them into the baking dish. Add the all-purpose flour, white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and grated nutmeg to the apples and mix well to coat evenly. Pour in the juice of half a lemon and stir to combine, which helps balance the sweetness and prevents the apples from browning.
  3. Make Crumble Topping: In a separate bowl, combine the porridge oats, flour, light brown sugar, and salt. Add the cold butter and rub it in with your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs with some small chunks of butter remaining. This technique creates a crispy, crumbly texture when baked.
  4. Assemble: Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple mixture in the baking dish, covering all the fruit.
  5. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and crispy and the apple filling is bubbling at the edges.
  6. Rest and Serve: Remove the apple crumble from the oven and let it stand for a few minutes before serving. For the best experience, serve warm with vanilla ice cream or custard.

Notes

  • Using cold butter for the crumble topping is crucial for creating a crisp texture.
  • You can substitute self-raising flour for all-purpose flour if you prefer a lighter topping.
  • Adjust sugar quantities according to the sweetness of your apples.
  • For added flavor, consider tossing some chopped nuts into the crumble topping.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated before serving.
