Scotch Eggs Recipe

4.6 from 75 reviews

Scotch Eggs are a classic British snack featuring hard-boiled eggs wrapped in seasoned sausage meat, coated in flour, egg, and breadcrumbs, and cooked to crispy perfection in an air fryer. This recipe offers a healthier twist by air frying instead of deep frying, resulting in a deliciously crunchy exterior with juicy sausage and a tender cooked egg inside.

Ingredients

Scale

Eggs

  • 6 hard boiled eggs (peeled & patted dry)
  • 1 large egg (beaten)

Sausage Mixture

  • 1 lb ground sausage

Coating

  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup plain bread crumbs

Instructions

  1. Prepare Sausage-Wrapped Eggs: Divide the ground sausage into 6 equal portions. Flatten each portion slightly with your hands. Carefully wrap each hard boiled egg completely with the sausage, making sure the sausage is evenly distributed and sealed around the egg.
  2. Coat the Scotch Eggs: Roll each sausage-covered egg first in the flour until evenly dusted. Next, dip into the beaten egg to coat thoroughly, then roll in plain bread crumbs until fully covered for a crispy crust.
  3. Arrange in Air Fryer: Place the coated sausage eggs into the basket of an air fryer, ensuring they are spaced out and not touching to allow even cooking.
  4. Air Fry: Set the air fryer to 390°F (about 200°C) and cook the eggs for 12 minutes, flipping them halfway through cooking to ensure even browning and crispiness on all sides.
  5. Serve: Remove the Scotch eggs from the air fryer and serve warm. They make a perfect snack or appetizer that is juicy inside with a crunchy outer layer.

Notes

  • Make sure the hard-boiled eggs are completely peeled and dried to help the sausage adhere better.
  • Using plain or panko breadcrumbs will affect the crispiness; panko will yield a crunchier texture.
  • If you don’t have an air fryer, these can be baked in a conventional oven at 400°F for 20-25 minutes, turning once for even cooking.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute the flour and breadcrumbs with gluten-free alternatives.
  • Allow the Scotch eggs to rest for a few minutes after cooking before slicing to prevent the sausage from falling apart.
