Patty melts are classic diner fare with a twist – a savory beef patty topped with gooey cheese, caramelized onions, and a secret sauce, all grilled between slices of rye bread until crispy and melty.

Ingredients

Scale

Secret Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Patty Melts:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • Butter, for grilling
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well and set aside.
  2. Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet, melt butter and cook sliced onions until caramelized. Set aside.
  3. Prepare the Patties: Divide ground beef into 4 portions, shape into thin patties, and season with salt and pepper.
  4. Cook the Patties: In the skillet, cook patties until done, about 3-4 minutes per side. Set aside.
  5. Assemble the Patty Melts: Butter rye bread slices and grill them. Top with Swiss cheese, patty, onions, cheddar cheese, and another bread slice.
  6. Grill the Patty Melts: Cook until golden brown and cheese is melted, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  7. Serve: Let the patty melts rest, then slice in half and serve with secret sauce.

Notes

  • You can customize your patty melts with additional toppings like pickles or mustard.
  • For a vegetarian option, swap the beef patty with a veggie burger.
