Ingredients

Scale

Apple Base:

  • 10 cups apples, cored, peeled, and sliced (honeycrisp recommended)
  • 1/3 cup coconut sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp white whole wheat flour

Crisp Topping:

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup white whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 cup coconut sugar
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts or pecans
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup melted butter or coconut oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and spray a 9×11 inch baking dish with nonstick spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Combine Apple Base Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix the thinly sliced apples with coconut sugar, cinnamon, and whole wheat flour until the apples are well coated.
  3. Assemble Apple Layer: Pour the apple mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out to form an even layer.
  4. Mix Crisp Topping: In a separate medium bowl, combine rolled oats, white whole wheat flour, coconut sugar, chopped walnuts or pecans, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and melted butter or coconut oil. Stir until all ingredients are thoroughly combined into a crumbly mixture.
  5. Add Topping to Apples: Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the apples in the baking dish, covering the fruit completely.
  6. Bake the Crisp: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling around the edges.
  7. Rest and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the apple crisp rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow the juices to settle and enhance the flavors.

Notes

  • Using honeycrisp apples gives a sweet and tart flavor, but you can substitute with any apple variety you prefer.
  • The crumble topping can be made with either butter or coconut oil depending on your dietary preference.
  • To make this recipe vegan, use coconut oil instead of butter and ensure your coconut sugar is vegan-certified.
  • Allow the apple crisp to cool slightly before serving to avoid burning and to let the texture set.
  • This dessert pairs wonderfully with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of Greek yogurt for added creaminess.
