  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg

Filling:

  • 2 cups grated cheese (such as mozzarella, cheddar, or a combination)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Yeast Mixture: In a bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and active dry yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Mix the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture, melted butter, and the egg. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough: Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic.
  4. Let the Dough Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Fill and Shape the Buns: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Flatten each piece slightly, place a tablespoon of grated cheese in the center, and fold the dough around it to form a bun.
  6. Final Rise and Bake: Place the buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover, and let them rise for another 30 minutes. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the buns with a bit of milk or beaten egg for a nice golden finish. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the buns are golden brown and the cheese is oozing out.
