Apple Mixture

  • 2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 to 1 cup butter, melted (see Notes below)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apple mixture: In a large bowl, combine cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, and vanilla extract. Add the peeled and cut apples to this mixture and stir well to coat all the apple pieces evenly.
  2. Assemble in baking dish: Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish thoroughly. Spread the apple mixture evenly into the dish as the base layer.
  3. Make the topping: Using the same bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  4. Add topping over apples: Pour the dry topping mixture evenly over the apple layer and spread it out gently to cover the apples completely.
  5. Pour melted butter: Drizzle the melted butter over the entire surface of the topping. Tilt the pan gently if needed to ensure the butter covers as much of the topping as possible for a golden crust.
  6. Bake the cake: Place the baking dish in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) and bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the cake is bubbly and the topping is lightly browned.
  7. Serve: Allow to cool slightly. Serve warm or cold plain or with milk, whipped cream, or ice cream as desired.
