Apple Mixture
- 5 cups apples, peeled and cut into 1 inch pieces
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
Topping
- 2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/4 cups sugar
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 3/4 to 1 cup butter, melted (see Notes below)
- Prepare the apple mixture: In a large bowl, combine cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, and vanilla extract. Add the peeled and cut apples to this mixture and stir well to coat all the apple pieces evenly.
- Assemble in baking dish: Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish thoroughly. Spread the apple mixture evenly into the dish as the base layer.
- Make the topping: Using the same bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- Add topping over apples: Pour the dry topping mixture evenly over the apple layer and spread it out gently to cover the apples completely.
- Pour melted butter: Drizzle the melted butter over the entire surface of the topping. Tilt the pan gently if needed to ensure the butter covers as much of the topping as possible for a golden crust.
